Tanka week - Day 3

Don't forget the creepers

Building... creation...
Tests the imagination.
At night, monsters come.
Can you survive? Are you done?
That's Minecraft for you, bitches.

Tanka week - Day 2

Knowledge

Open minds we praise,
The world is full of debate
So much to learn and
So much knowledge to collect
Why waste the chance in anger?

Tanka week - Day 1

Sun

On a sunlit day,
All is right, is beautiful.
Clouds silver crested,
The world radiant with the
rays of our Mother.

Most people have heard of haikus, but I only found out what a tanka was very recently. It's a similar form of Japanese poetry, except it follows the form 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 in it's syllable lengths (except that Japanese poetry isn't technically measured in syllables, they're measured in a unit that they call on and we call morae, which determines the length of a syllable... but morae aren't used in English, so, it's all good.) Anyway, I've been thinking that I wanted to write a tanka every day for a week, and because I haven't been posting much, I figured that I might as well! Partly just for the hell of it, and partly so more people know about this cool form of poetry :). Write your own tanka, it could be fun ^_^.

Crowds

If one thing ever really irritated me, it's my own damn fallibility.

You know those days?

I sat here ruminating through several things I wanted to talk about - I drew a little picture on my hand, too, which I know was related to a blog post idea and a good one, but I've forgotten what it meant - and as I went through the first one, two lines into attempting to plan it I thought "Fuck it, I don't want to plan this, I'll write it." And then before I even got a sentence out I thought "God I'm so lazy." There was a coherence to this train of thought two minutes ago, I think.

Christmas... I'll go with it.

I'm not one of those scrooges who feels the need to annually complain around this point about how fake, commercialised, etc. Christmas is. But it's a consideration, and I don't dismiss it out of hand; I just tend to ignore it and have fun.

The tokenism/racism distinction

I was reading a creative writing guide that advised when writing to stay away from featuring an all-white cast "unless your novel is set in the rural parts of Sweden." I highly disagree. The implication here is that you should balance up your novel with a racially mixed cast, which is one of the best examples of tokenism - treating someone as a "token", as if they're just somebody that you use to satisfy certain criteria.
