Cross-dressing

We live in a strange old world. A world with flashing traffic lights and glass windows and ticking clocks and simple light-switches and extended noun phrases. All these inventions, bizarre when viewed objectively, but that help us get by in day to day life. Not everything is so useful, though. Traffic lights control transport, windows regulate heat, clocks keep the time, light-switches make it easier to see what you're doing. But is there any real need for make-up, for art, for puzzles and posters? Well, art and posters are for enjoyment and viewing, and make-up to make you look "nice", and puzzles to challenge your mind, but there's no inherent need for them. We could survive without them for sure.

But that doesn't mean people won't still play the necessity card when they hear about someone cross-dressing.

Better than = Good mentality

I noticed a cereal box just earlier this evening that said on the side that Plastic isn't widely recycled, but Cardboard is (recycling ftw?) and below that it commented that 90% of its box was made of recycled materials. That got me thinking. Here I am staring at a box and instead of reaching for the originally intended custard creams I think "...What about the other 10%? That's still 10% of waste that you're chucking out there."

Midnight

Ah, so beautiful at this hour. And so tired. I really shouldn't be staying up so late with school and all but I'm one of those peeps who can't be bothered to go to bed until I absolutely feel I must.

This post was so short to the point of being pointless but, whatever :).

The joy of writing

So, I got my results back on my English assessment today. 20/20 (squee!) The awesome part is, I've got full marks in the past couple of assessments too. The most recent one was a relatively simple task: write an editorial on a subject that you hate. This was a follow-up from the previous two adjacent assessments, where we had to explain the same, except in the form of a presentation, then a discussion. In the former assessment, my chosen topic was to take a rip out of the very thing I was undertaking: exams.

Believe me, though I don't actually have many deep-rooted feelings of hatred for our dear friend the examination, I had fun writing that one...

We're all hypocrites

I don't claim that I'm consistent with my beliefs and actions, that I'm free from being a hypocrite... but I think very few people can truly claim that they do. We all lapse from time to time. The problem comes in drawing the line.

Complaint

Today, I took a tally. Every time I found myself complaining about something - even if it was a moan and resentful thought - I drew a line on my hand. I'm sure I probably missed a few, but I counted seven. It's something I plan to do again tomorrow, because I want to do better than seven. I want to reach the point where I can let out my frustrations in such a way that I don't have to draw a single line on my hand eventually.

Jodi Picoult - Review

About a month ago, I got into a really rather awesome author by the name of Jodi Picoult! I've read four of her books, am on the fifth, and plan to read every one of them. She's the author of My Sister's Keeper, House Rules, Sing You Home, Keeping Faith, Mercy (the five I've read/am reading in order,) and other titles such as Nineteen Minutes, The Pact, Perfect Match and Songs of the Humpback Whale.

I know I'm not the only one who wants to punch Mondays in the face. Just why does everyone hate them so much?

Leonidas and religion (Pt. II)

Atheist is a pleasant word to me. When I first read it, I assumed it was pronounced ah-fee-ihst until I started to get into the realms of religion and philosophy and heard the "ay" sound there. Most likely I wouldn't like the word if I wasn't an atheist. The above was all superfluous, I just felt like opening my second post on religion with a little reflection on pronunciation :).

But contrary to popular belief (in certain parts of the USA anyway, I'm told,) I'm not an atheist because I don't want to submit to authority or because I refuse to accept God or anything like that. This post sets out to outline just some of the reasons why I don't believe.

Stigma

You know, I'm a big fan of apples. I'm not satisfied if there's a day where I haven't eaten one apple - but mainly because that's part of the autistic routine I don't like to deviate from. Also because they taste amazing. Now, when I eat apples, I'm not wasteful, I eat all of it, core included, and yes, some of the god-feared seeds. What's bizarre is that this simple act of eating an edible core causes me all kinds of grief. I've been called "One of those weird people who eats apple cores" at least twice.

All of this insanity makes me wonder at the power of stigma.
